I came across your blog by mistake, I was looking for legal advice on divorce. I understand you are a solicitor so while I am here I thought I mgiht try my luck with a question.
I have a friend who is retired. He lived with a woman for a few years then they married, it only lasted 18 months, there are no children. She contibuted nothing being an unsuccessful artist. He has been told that he has to contibute a quarter of everything he has, his life savings and invesyments to her for the divorce settlement. Should he find a better lawyer?

Hi,

With a short childless marriage, the principles of equality and sharing developed over the last ten years do not necessarily apply. The traditional approach to such marriages has been to put the parties back into the position they were in before the marriage. The courts might be more generous now but 25%, on the facts you relay, sounds outlandish. More detail is, however, required before anyone could say your friend's lawyer is wrong but I do think he should take a second opinion.

I can be contacted professionally through the firm's website at

www.gsc.co.uk

or I can be emailed at

I had no direct contact details for you so have had to post this reply here. Using the above contact points the confidentiality of any further advice can be maintained.

Regards,

Steven.
