Is random death essential to free will? Hmm, an interesting conundrum and one which I haven't given any thought to before. Initial thoughts are actually yes it is, at least in relation to things like whether you choose to live a healthy lifestyle or not, or take your own life. Will think some more about it if I can't sleep tonight - it beats counting sheep!
